Jazz Ensembles

Director's Band
    The purpose of our Jazz Program is to teach jazz concepts, styles and improvisation. There is one jazz band during the school day that meets both in the fall and spring semester. Membership is by audition. In the spring semester, there are two more “zero period” jazz ensembles. Director’s Band is the top Jazz Ensemble. The “B” Band is a training band that also attends festivals and performs concerts. Students are assigned into positions in the various bands by audition. Ability, maturity and instrumentation needs are considered. Performance attire is selected by students and director.

Supplies:
  • Black Instrumental Folder (order from Band Department)
  • Black 3 ring binder 1-1˝" with plastic sheet protectors
  • Pencils
  • Metronome
  • Tuner
  • Personal Instrument needs – mouth piece, reeds, sticks, mallets, oil, cleaning supplies etc.

    2009 Jazz Ensemble Auditions

    Please come early to get checked in and warmed up.
    To audition you MUST have all the items listed below and your 2008/2009 fees cleared with Royal ASB and the Band department.

    2009 Jazz Ensemble Audition Instructions

    When you enter the audition room, you will be asked to play the following:

  • Two blues scales of your choice. They must be memorized.
  • Your chromatic scale from the lowest note you can play to the highest note you can play and back down again. This must be memorized.
  • Your audition piece, which you can find here. This does not need to be memorized.
  • Everyone except for the bass and drums will be playing their audition with the recording of a rhythm section, so please practice with it. One of the recordings is at a slightly faster tempo. You can choose which recording you want to play with. *Oleo is a jazz standard. If you haven’t heard a recording of it, I highly suggest you listen to one to help you with the rhythm.
